During the tragedy and turmoil of the Second World War, and right on the eve of India's Independence, a seed was planted in the heart of Kolkata. Hindi High School was founded to provide quality education to our youth, but in an atmosphere steeped in traditional values and more, rather than the colonial atmosphere that was common in the best schools of the era. The school, which would be re-christened as "Birla High School" in 1997, began with only 12 students - A far cry from the near two thousand five hundred students that throng its halls today.

Just like a modest seed grows into a mighty oak with many branches, so too has our institution. Birla High School, Mukundapur is just another step in our never-ending mission - providing the finest quality education, coupled with traditional customs and practices, to create well-rounded, 21st-century citizens who have a deep appreciation of their history and culture.

Legacy is a very important word in our lexicon. After all, it is our 80-year legacy that sustains us and carries us forward. Our legacy of quality education dictates that Birla High School, Mukundapur be equipped with the latest tools and best practices in modern pedagogy. Special attention is paid to modern learning concepts like meta-cognition and critical thinking. State-of-the-art technologies like interactive whiteboards empower our teachers to flex their creative muscles and make education a fun, enriching experience for your child.

The Legacy of the Birlas

Over the years thousands of students have passed through the gates of Birla High School. We count among our alumni distinguished citizens, leaders and brilliant minds. We are certain that the children who we welcome to BHS Mukundapur every morning will carry that legacy forward. Ultimately, it is they who will bear the torch of the BHS legacy, and for that, they deserve the very best of our care and attention. It is our responsibility to provide it to them.
